4 Keys to a Successful Internship

Abraham Mendieta | April 23, 2025

Before starting an internship, remember that you’re not just gaining work experience — you’re investing in your future.

In fact, paid interns are more than twice as likely to land a job after graduation compared to non-interns, according to a study by the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE).

With the stakes this high, it’s important to approach your internship with a clear plan and strategy. Let’s explore four key areas that can help turn your internship into a valuable learning experience and a launchpad for your career.

Set yourself up for success

In today’s world, you’re not just a name on a resume — you’re a walking, talking digital brand. So before Day 1, take some time to define your personal brand. It’ll help distinguish you from the pack and highlight the skills and traits that make you unique.

Once you’ve defined your personal brand, it’s time to put your best foot forward. Stay organized and prioritize your tasks using time blocks to help minimize distractions and maximize productivity. Being focused, professional and efficient will help you soak up as much knowledge as possible and truly make the most of your experience.

At Paycom, internships aren’t about busywork and errands. Our paid interns receive the same welcome as any other employee and gain real-world experience working alongside experts in the HR tech industry.

Seek feedback

Meaningful feedback is crucial to your growth and development, yet only 21% of U.S. employees said they received any in the last week, according to Gallup. It might feel intimidating, but don’t be afraid to ask for advice from your leaders, mentors and colleagues. This two-way communication will not only help you improve but also provide valuable insights into your organization.

Just ask Hiba! She started as a Product Design Intern and is now thriving as a full-time employee. “Looking back, I’m most grateful for my manager’s feedback. It was very specific to me, my strengths and the things I needed to work on. I took that back with me my senior year and was able to strengthen my skills so I could have more confidence and be even more prepared for a full-time position,” she said.

Build relationships

Your internship class is a treasure trove of networking opportunities. Don’t just connect with your bosses — make an effort to build relationships with your peers from different universities and cities.

In fact, workers overwhelmingly agree mentors and sponsors are crucial to creating a healthy employee experience. Gallup’s Center on Black Voices found that they “propel development, foster engagement and facilitate positive organizational perceptions.”

At Paycom, you’ll have access to both informal and formal mentors who can guide you through your journey. Scott L., Manager of Data Engineering at Paycom, experienced this firsthand. “I am extremely grateful for the mentorship I received upon joining, as it helped set me up for success. Being encouraged to embrace challenges and opportunities has resulted in rewarding technical and professional growth,” Scott said.

Cultivate a growth mindset

Internships are the perfect time to ask questions, seek help and learn from your mistakes! So don’t be embarrassed to ask open-ended questions or admit when you don’t know something. “It’s a sign of strength, not weakness,” said Kalpesh, Data Scientist at Paycom. “Be curious, stay humble and never stop learning.”

And if you’re still not convinced, our very own Supervisor of Software Development, Bao, offered this advice: “Go in with an open mind. Be curious, ask challenging questions and offer positive contributions to your team.”
