Derek has been at Paycom in the New Client Setup department since June 2013. Recently, I reached out and asked him to share his story.
Describe what you do.
My goal is to facilitate a cohesive implementation team full of customer-focused implementation experts. I personally challenge myself daily with developing my team, expecting and welcoming change and continually innovating.
What advice would you give a new employee for being successful at Paycom?
This job will grow and sharpen you. However, you will benefit most from your career here if you prepare mentally and physically for this process every day. Some days are difficult, but it will be incredibly rewarding. Working at Paycom is an amazing opportunity – if you are willing to work hard and learn daily, your opportunities will feel endless!
What’s the one word you would choose to describe Paycom, and why?
Game-changing. This is a perfect word to describe what Paycom is doing within our industry, but it’s also a way to describe what a Paycom career does for its people. The opportunities found here are changing lives, and Paycom’s local success is shaping the community around it as well. In every way, Paycom is a game changer.
What is your greatest accomplishment at Paycom?
I am most proud of the influence I’ve made in developing those I’ve worked with over the years. Helping others achieve their goals and watching them thrive in new positions is the most exhilarating experience you can have as a leader.
What makes you proud to work at Paycom?
The vast impact we have on thousands of companies and the people they employ is remarkable. I come to work every day knowing what I do is legitimately important for the people and families our service touches and for those I personally influence in my role. I’m also proud of the success Paycom has had as whole.
Where has been your favorite place to travel, and why?
I traveled to Italy and the Mediterranean region for a couple of weeks last summer with my wife, and it was the greatest adventure ever. The culture is so aged and rich – I couldn’t believe the beauty of the history, art, landscape, architecture and everything. I’ll never forget the trip, and I feel very blessed to have experienced it all.
Who would play you in a movie about your life? Why?
Paul Rudd is probably the best fit. He is often portrayed as an average guy but approaches life with a fun, humorous twist. I like to think of myself as being pretty normal with a good sense of humor.
If you could pick anyone in the world to have lunch with, who would it be and why?
C.S. Lewis – he had a brilliant mind, lived at an incredible time in history and experienced a significant life transformation well into adulthood. He penned some historically significant works in philosophy, theology and creative writing. He was just a dynamic person who would provide memorable conversation and lots of general wisdom.
